The Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography, a public cultural institution under the authority of the Cluj County Council, invites you to participate in the opening of the exhibition “Călata area - seen by painter Edvi Illés Aladár”, which will take place on August 1, 2024, 5 p.m., at the headquarters of the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography, 21, Memorandum street.
The images with themes from the Călata area represent a significant part of the rich artistic activity of painter Edvi Illés Aladár, an activity that spans on more than six decades, starting in the 1890s and until his death in 1958. The famous watercolorist stayed in August 1902 for three weeks in the Călata area, then, fascinated by what he saw here, he spent the summer of 1903 in Huedin and the surrounding villages. In 1904 he returned for a longer period as a member of the documentation team for the volume Malonyay Dezső: A magyar nép művészete [Hungarian folk art].
The exhibition offers a selection of original photographs, taken by the artist in the period 1902–1904, from authentic works and reproductions based on some of the painter’s works. The artifacts come from the “Győr László” collection in Budapest, the exhibition being completed with pieces from the Călata area, characteristic of the same period, which are in the heritage of the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography.
The exhibition will be open from 1–25 August 2024.
